Abstract

This study presents the results of research linked to the application of a Potentially Significant Teaching Unit (PSTU). Aspects related to the structure of the solar system were addressed, more specifically the scale of size and distance of the planets. The application was conducted with a group of five elementary school teachers as part of a continuing education course. Through analysis of the data produced during the application, we sought to answer the following question: What is the feasibility of a PLU applied in a continuing education course for elementary school teachers to address the scale of the solar system? Therefore, the overall objective was to develop, implement, and evaluate a PSTU focused on teaching the characteristics of the solar system to a group of elementary school teachers. Methodologically, the study adopted a qualitative approach, being an empirical study of the didactic intervention type. Through the analysis of the data produced, we can infer that the PSTU not only demonstrated a high degree of applicability and replicability, but also had a motivating impact on teachers, encouraging them to incorporate astronomy into their classes, seeking to promote more meaningful learning.
