Abstract

Astronomy is part of the daily life of modern society, even if it is one of the oldest sciences. However, in the school environment there are still several barriers to its implementation. In this sense, this paper aimed to analyze the possible Social Representations shared among 24 students in the last year of High School in a Brazilian public institution, deriving from their knowledge about the inductive theme "astronomy." The data were obtained through the evocation/word association test and analyzed using a structuralist approach which led the frame of four sectors. According to the results, we can say that the students share Social Representations about astronomy, for presenting a discourse permeated by generalist concepts and away from the reified universe. It is important a readjustment aiming to the introduction of astronomy teaching in the course of Basic Education.
